James and John asked Jesus if they could sit on His right hand and His left. They hoped for worldly power and authority. They didn’t yet understand Jesus’s mission and purpose.
Jesus explained that some people on earth rule over others and exercise authority over them. But it shouldn’t be that way with His followers.
“Whoseover will be great among you, shall be your minister: and whosoever of you will be chiefest, shall be servant of all.” (Mark 10:43-44)
Even Jesus, the greatest King the world would ever know, came not to be served but to serve others. He would “give his life a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45)
Jesus was humble, submissive, kind, and gracious.
That’s what He hopes we’ll try to be.
That’s what will make us truly great.
