John 13 and 14 are chapters about love. “Love”, “loveth”, or “loved” is mentioned 15 times.
Jesus shows us by example how to love others as He, King of All, carefully washed the feet of each of his disciples. Humility is an important part of love.
Jesus also gives His disciples a direct commandment to love. “Love one another; as I have loved you.”
Remember, this is the second great commandment, to love our neighbors.
In John 14 it tells us that we show our love to God by keeping His commandments. “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him.” (John 14:21)
Keeping God’s commandments is how we keep the first great commandment.
Most of God’s commandments keep us safe and close to God, which helps us show love for ourselves, too.
I love that at Christmastime, we especially focus on these two commandments to love God and others.
