The disciples had seen the risen Christ.
They felt the prints in His hands.
They walked and talked with Him who once was dead.
But now what?
Simon Peter and some of the other disciples had been fishermen by trade.
They went fishing. 🤯
We read this and think, but you’ve seen and learned so much, why would you go back to your old life?
I think we often do the same thing.
We might read a passage of the Bible and be so touched, but in a few days we’ve forgotten to act on what we read.
We might attend a church meeting and be inspired by what was said, but we end up going right back to our day-to-day life as if nothing had changed.
It makes sense that the disciples went back to what was comfortable.
I really love what happens next though.
Jesus comes, and before they recognize that it’s Him, he asks them if they’d caught anything. When they say no, He tells them to cast their net on the right side of the ship. They do, and catch a whole netful of fish. It’s the same miracle that happened when Simon Peter was first called to follow Jesus.
Simon quickly recognizes what has happened and jumps out of the boat to go to Jesus.
After a while, everyone is sitting around a fire and eating fish and bread with Jesus.
Jesus asks Simon Peter, “Do you love me more than these fish?”
Of course I do, Lord.
Then feed my sheep.
Three times Jesus asks Simon Peter if he loves Him, and tells him to feed His sheep.
He would no more be a fisherman.
He was called to share the message of Jesus Christ and His gospel with the world.
It’s okay to be uncomfortable.
It’s time to get to work.
